UPDATED Oct. 15, 2026: The man fatally shot by Middle Township police in Rio Grande on Sept. 25 was Andre Moore, 37, of Cape May Court House, the New Jersey Attorney General's Office said Wednesday.

The office also identified the two officers who fired as Christopher Rudy and Ty Pettit of the Middle Township Police Department.

The update adds that officers had tried to pull the car over before the shooting and had not been able to stop it. The release did not say when or where that attempt happened. Officers forced their way into the car after hearing a woman screaming inside, the office said.

The woman has not been identified, and her condition has not been released.

Original story, Sept. 25

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — Middle Township police fatally shot a man who was holding a knife to a woman inside a disabled car in Rio Grande on Friday morning, according to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office.

Around 10:21 a.m. on Sept. 25, officers came upon a disabled vehicle on Route 9 at Satt Boulevard. They heard screaming from inside and saw a man holding a knife to a woman. Two officers fired, striking the man, who died. The woman was taken to the hospital with multiple stab wounds.

The Attorney General's Office is investigating, as state law requires for any death during a police encounter, and its findings will go to a grand jury. The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office says there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Mayor Christopher Leusner, a former Middle Township police chief, asked residents "to be patient, to rely on official information, and to avoid spreading unconfirmed accounts."
